Just follow my map instructions for a great day inside Chinatown. Do it early in the day while most places are open. Chinatown is an awesome district and absolutely worth a visit for a half-day. It’s a great place to graze for all you foodies. You can easily do it on your own, at least until my Hawaii Food Tours resumes operations. Chinatown is tiny in size, just 9 square blocks. (Be sure to explore both sides of each street in my instructions here.) There are many shops, markets, souvenir stores, bakeries, and more on both sides of each street). Here’s the map, and beneath that are my walking notes for you.
If you want to do a walk of Chinatown, the route is highlighted in yellow. Begin at Smith Street at King Street and walk north along Smith up to Beretania Ave. Turn left on Beretania, and then left again on Maunakea Street, now in the Southerly (towards the water) direction. Maunakea is the “main” street in Chinatown and includes so many worthwhile places to try tasty bites.
Look everywhere. Look up at the building facades and see buildings dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Avoid buying bulk of anything, especially fruit. If it’s already bagged, move on to a fruit stand where you can buy one or two to see if you like it.
Here’s a link for a few tips on what to try. Continue south on Maunakea to King Street and turn right (west). You’ll see so many interesting places. Turn right into the Kekaulike Market and explore in there completely. Here’s my map of your suggested route highlighted in yellow, and thetwo marketsyou should definitely spend time inside of, are circled in red. Maunakea Marketplace is even better!
